Online teaching has become rampant due to corona crises and lockdown.
Educationists and teachers all over the globe are trying their best to deliver education through some online platforms.
Many teachers have started live classes using the zoom, Google classroom, WebEx, etc. Not every teacher is tech-savvy and ready for the platform. Many are trying their first hand for online teaching.
For those teachers like me who are making their first entries over the online platform I have devised a few tips. I hope these tips help to enrich your experience as an online tutor and enable students to achieve better.
Online Teaching Tips – Live Class
- Be Calm. Do Not Haste
- Speak loud and clear. Do Not Shout.
- Have enough pause between words
- Address your students with Name
- Instruct clearly. Repeat twice.
- Ask specific questions.
- Keep your material ready while going live
- Maintain your posture
- Use Desk / Table. Do Not teach from bed/kitchen
- Your background should be tidy. Try to have clear Background
- Make yourself visible properly. At least your face and shoulders should be visible
- Be conscious of your body language. Avoid unnecessary touching to face, nose, eyes…
- Be in a formal setup. Don’t make it look casual or unconcerned.
- Yes, you are at home but you are working. So appear formally.
- Avoid unusual postures like drooped shoulders, frowning faces, lying or stretching, etc.
- Remember, you are on a video camera. All your movements are noticed.
- Ask your students to keep their mic muted or mute it yourself.
- Be courteous. Don’t reprimand.
- Start your lecture early by 10 min. and wait for students to join. Keep a slide as “Class starting shortly”.
- There are minor time differences in individual clocks. Some may join early or a little late. Be considerate. Allow them.
- If possible then make use of a computer or laptop to teach live.
- If you are using your mobile handset make sure it is stable and on some stand. Keep your hands free.
- Give margin to students. They will take their time to adjust to the online environment.
- Provide content in advance of lectures and ask students to refer before being online.
- Be smart. Tech Savvy. Upgrade. Don’t let students outsmart you.
- Make your online lectures interesting by using images, mind maps, videos, etc. Don’t be a bore.
- Teach to facilitate learning and understanding. Don’t boast ownership of content.
- Learn, Teach, Share, Collaborate, and Help. Don’t just grow alone.
